How does it work?
A media player is a small CPU with very fast working hardware used for decoding standard video formats such as MPEG1, 2, 4, DivX or XVid. The CPU assigns which file has to be played and the decoder takes care of all the playing. Next to video formats, a media player can also play pictures in BMP, PNG or JPG format. It is a very specialized piece of hardware, solely used for playing video's and pictures.

Media players can also be connected to WLAN or LAN interfaces to manage the media players functions and actions or to update firmware or content. The add-on interfaces such as USB and RS232 allow for connection with USB drives, GPS receivers and scanners to make the content more interactive to their environment.
